2021 Season - Executive Update

MBA Executive Friday 23rd April 2021. From secretary Paul Watkins

As we have always indicated the health and well being of our members is paramount and return to bowls in a safe and orderly manner.

Please refer to Covid 19 guidance for outdoor lawn bowls in Wales. Version 3 dated 20th April 2021 on Bowls Wales website.

WBA have directed us to 4 rinks x 3 bowl triples over 18 ends in Carruthers shield for our sectional games. We wait to see if this will be amended when we go to the knockout stages with round 1 on 10th July.

At our MBA executive meeting on Friday 23rd April 2021 there were many discussion and debates regarding the commencement and structure to our forthcoming season.

MBA League games will commence using the same format, 4 rinks x 3 bowl triples over 18 ends. If we go down to alert level 2 as indicated by Welsh government from 17th May we will revert to our usual 4 rinks x fours.

GBL games will be as normal format of 3 rinks x fours with two bowls. This will assist those clubs struggling to get 12 players as they can play with a minimum of 9 players and lose a quarter of the shots as World Bowls law, 39.2.2.1 & 2.

There are some clubs struggling with player numbers and due to this loss are not playing Carruthers shield (Caldicot, Monmouth & Pontypool Park/Girlings), MBA (Monmouth) or GBL (Abergavenny, Caldicot, Chepstow) not sure of Bailey Park, this season. Some clubs will use a rota system for their players to give all a chance to play. With the Welsh Government advice in not to share cars this may make it difficult for some members of clubs to travel.

Please note that the green at Chepstow is to be re-laid and they will play all their games away probably until July/August. We trust their opponents will accommodate them in these trying times for the Chepstow club and members.

Due to these restraints both MBA & GBL leagues will be played with no promotion or relegation in season 2021. Trophies will be awarded to the champions of each division.

Our MBA knock out cup will be played as normal on alternative Fridays from 21st May, if we go down to alert level 2 as indicated by Welsh government from 17th May we will revert to our usual 4 rinks x fours.

The inter-association games on alternative Fridays from 28th May will be played with 6 rinks x 3 bowl triples over 15 ends. This will allow our association games to continue and assist those associations with lower numbers. Also, the President/Chairman of each association can have the honour of a year in office.

We realise that we cannot please all our competitive bowlers but there are our MBA competitions to strive to win and get to the WBA finals at Llandrindod Wells in September. Let us make the most of season 2021 to place us in a better position for 2022.
