Caerleon Sports Weekly Roundup - Week 5


Inter Association
Friday saw the first round of the inter association matches take place. A very tight encounter at Beaufort saw Newport & District come away with 6 shot (16-6) win against West Mon. At Oakdale, South Mon recorded a 22 shot win (20-2) win against Easte Valley to sit top after the 1st round of matches.

Carruthers Shield - MBA - 3rd Round
Yesterday saw the final MBA round for the Carruthers Shield, as the remaining 14 teams battled it out to claim one of the 7 spots in the last 32 draw.
Crosskeys travelled to St Julians and came away with a comfortable 41 shot win whilst at the top of the valley, the local derby between RTB Ebbw Vale and Beaufort, went they way of the visiting team as they secured a 22 shot win.
In another derby, Blaenavon travelled to Gadiffaith and record a heavy win to progress. A series of fine performances from players of Six Bells saw them cause an upset as they overcame first division Cwmbran by 7 shots and in the all 1st Division clash between Bedwas & Blackwood which was closely fought encounter, it was the visitors that came away with victory by 7 shots.
Ynysddu overcame their top flight opponents with a 15 shot win at Pontymister Athletic and Newbridge completed the final 7 qualifiers from Monmouthshire, with a 33 shot win over Pontymister Welfare.

Good Luck to all 7 teams who now enter the draw for the last 32, which will take place on 2nd June.

MBA Division 4
In the only game of the afteoon, Beechwood recorded their first win of the season with a 12 point win at Panteg Park.

MBA Division 5
With Six Bells and Gadiffaith both in Carruthers action, only 2 of the 4 scheduled games took place, with the top of the table clash between Whiteheads and Aberca going the way of the home side, as they recorded 13 points and keep their 100% start to the season. Belle Vue continued their winning start to the season as they moved upto 3rd following a 12-2 win away at Gilwe.

GBL Division 1
Monmouth (12-0 against Newbridge) and Pontymister Athletic (10-2 against Croesyceiliog) both maintained their 100% record with wins against their respective opponents to remain 1st and 2nd in the division whilst Chepstow travelled to Caldicot and recorded their first win of the season picking up a maxiumum 12 points. Bedwas & Crosskeys was postponed due to Carruthers at the home club.

GBL Division 2
RTB Ebbw Vale made it 4 wins from 4 with a 12-0 win over 2nd place Blackwood. Bedwelty Park won 10-2 at Pontymister Welfare who had to play short whilst in the closest game of the afteoon Abergavenny won by 4 at home to Abercan, despite losing on 2 of the 3 rinks.

GBL Division 3
The first scheduled weekend of game in the division saw 5 games take place. Last years champions St Julians made a winning start with a maximum 10 points against Bailey Park despite having to play one short. Beaufort edged out Ynysddu in a closely fought game to win by 7 shots. Abertillery won on both rinks at home to Pontypool Park Girlings whilst Cwmbran took the spoils away to Blackwood. In the final game and closest game of the afteoon, Croesyceiliog edged out Oakdale by 5 shots.

MBA Cup
In a game brought forward, Pontnewydd booked their place in the 3rd round with a 37 shot win against New Tredegar.
