Caerleon Sports Weekly Roundup - Week 1


The 2024 leagues got underway yesterday and in true fashion, the Welsh weather tried to play it's part in the proceeding with the rain and cold weather hitting us. Despite the weather, all games were played and my thanks to all teams for sending in their results promptly as always.

MBA Division 1
Crosskeys began the defence of their title with a convincing 51 shot and 14 points win at home to newly promoted Newbridge. Blackwood began with a 10-4 win away at Pontymister Athletic whilst Croesyceilog and Cwmbran Park both recorded narrow 9-5 wins over their respective opponents.

MBA Division 2
Rhymney Gwent started their season with a 12-2 win over Pontnewydd despite being playing short. RTB Ebbw Vale won 10-4 at Blaenavon and Chepstow overcame local rivals Caldicot to picking up 10 points. Pontypool Park Girlings and St Julian's played out a draw, but with Pontypool winning 3 rinks to 1, they took the lions share of the points 9-5.

MBA Division 3
Ynysddu continued from last year's successful season with a 13-1 away win at Machen. Llanhilleth and Blaina both came away with 12-2 wins over local rivals (Abertillery and Beaufort respectively) whilst Bedwelty Park recorded a 10-4 win away at Abergavenny.

MBA Division 4
Pontymister Welfare started with a 12-2 win against New Tredegar, who unfortunately had to play short. Caerleon and Panteg House both recorded 10-4 away wins against Oakdale and Beechwood. Panteg Park recorded a 9-5 win over Firbank in a closely fought game.

MBA Division 5
Newport Athletic, Whiteheads and Aberca all used their home advantage to began with their season with big 14-0 wins over their respective opponents. In the other game of the day, Belle Vue won won 10-4 at Pontyfelin.

GBL Division 1
A series of close games to start the season with less than 10 shots separating all 3 matches. Bedwas winning at Caldicot (10-2), Monmouth winning at Croesyceilog (10-2) and Newbridge winning at home to Chepstow (10-2).

GBL Division 2
RTB Ebbw Vale started with a big 12-0 win at home to Pontymister Welfare. Blackwood won 10-2 at home to Aberca whilst Blaina won by a single shot at home to Beechwood 9-3
